Chapter Three
When Zarum spoke, E'lan didn't hear him at first. His
heart was hammering so loudly in his ears.
"I need to be going," Zarum said again. He gazed
around on the grass and found where he'd discarded his
tunic earlier, and puled it on over his head. It hadn't
been that far away from the furs after al.
E'lan tipped his head in confusion. Zarum had
definitely enjoyed what they'd just done together, but
perhaps he couldn't coax him past the gender barrier
after al. It looked like Zarum wanted to run.
"I thought we could head back to my sleeping
platform for a while. Maybe talk some more," E'lan
suggested hopefuly.
Zarum studied E'lan. He hadn't expected such a
forceful display of sexuality from her, and he certainly
hadn't expected his body to respond to her advances.
The nature of the things she'd done had surprised him.
He'd fucked a few women since reaching maturity, but
none of them had ever touched him in that way; only the
men had. And he wasn't sure what to make of it.
"E'lan—" Zarum scrubbed his face. "I know your
elders have chosen me to be your mate, and I came to
the gathering knowing that might happen, but I can't be
bonded to you."
The wind rustled the leaves and shifted a scattering of
clouds, obscuring the moon. E'lan looked up at the
skies, searching for a sign, pleading with the four spirits
to grant him permission to tel Zarum the truth. But there
was no answer.
E'lan exhaled heavily and nodded his head. "I
understand. I'l let the elders know so they may choose
another." He raised his eyes. "But I could use some help
tomorrow if you don't mind tagging along with me a
while longer. I need to harvest a few beetles and they
can only be found deep inside the meat of living trees."
"Who usualy helps you?" Zarum lifted a few skins,
folded them over his arm and picked up the basket,
cradling it against his chest.
"I usualy do it myself." E'lan grinned when Zarum
coughed out a laugh. "What? You don't think I can
chop down a tree on my own?" He puled the fur
forward and folded it in half, then roled it up; flinging it
over his shoulder once he was done.
Zarum folowed behind E'lan. It was quite dark now
that the moon was hidden, and he didn't know the trail,
so he was relying on her to find the way back. "I'm sure
you're quite capable of chopping down a tree or
accomplishing anything else you set your mind to." He
stopped walking, realizing what he'd said and how it
might be interpreted. The last thing he wanted to do
was hurt E'lan. She seemed like an amazing person.
Zarum jogged to catch up with E'lan and found her
standing in the path waiting for him. "I'm sorry about
that. I didn't mean to—"
"No, it's alright. I'l find someone." E'lan pressed his
free hand onto his hip and studied Zarum. "When did
you realize you liked cock?" He blinked expectantly,
waiting for Zarum to answer.
Zarum cleared his throat. "Excuse me?"
E'lan turned and started walking again. "Zarum, we
both know you like men. Let's move past trying to hide
it. As your friend, I'm curious as to when you knew.
